CureMetrix helps radiologists make better, faster decisions with AI

It’s no secret the pandemic kept many people at home for the bulk of the last year.

At the same time, businesses that weren’t deemed essential were forced to close their doors, at least temporarily.

Due to this confluence of factors, radiologists across the country have a massive backlog of X-rays to sift through. Luckily, thanks to CureMetrix’s robust AI-powered solutions, they don’t have to do it all on their own.

In one of our favorite episodes of From Lab to Launch, Qualio’s CEO, Robert Fenton sits down with Sam Dribin, CTO of CureMetrix, to talk about how the technology company is using AI and medical imaging to improve healthcare outcomes for women.

“Our mission is to help radiologists improve the accuracy and detection in the classification of anomalies in mammography,” Sam explains.

The company is focused on helping doctors save lives by supporting better clinical decision-making while improving financial outcomes for hospitals and clinics.

“If you have a backlog of 100,000+ images, we can flag the ones that stand out and let the team know someone should take a look at it.”

Before CureMetrix, radiologists had a detection system that consisted of their own eyes. Thanks to CureMetrix, human error is largely removed from the equation altogether — resulting in a 30% reduction in reading time and an even more impressive 63% reduction in false positives.

“CAD products have been around in various forms for quite some time,” Sam says. “But we are one of the first AI/machine-learning-driven platforms.”

    How CureMetrix works

Here’s what the average patient can expect their radiologists workflow to look like with CureMetrix in place:

    • The patient comes into the office, and X-rays are taken
    • CureMetrix is 'CCd' on those images
    • The data is anonymized, encrypted and AI-analyzed in the cloud
    • The results are returned
    • CureMetrix either confirms the radiologist’s conclusions, or notifies them that there’s something they might have missed

    The result?

Patients receive better, more trusted care, and radiologists can accomplish more in less time.

A neurobiology PhD candidate becomes a CTO

Sam went to grad school for a PhD in neurobiology.

“Pretty early on, I realized that my interests were way more aligned with engineering the behind-the-lab bench solution than the experiments themselves,” Sam says. “So I went to work for pharma in the pharmaceutical realm to really bridge the gap between biology and technology.”

Since making that decision, Sam hasn’t looked back.

And he suspects others will follow a similar path moving forward.

“I really think that’s the future: biologists who can program,” Sam adds.

Using Qualio to secure regulatory approval

To sell their software to radiologists, CureMetrix needed to secure FDA 510(k) regulatory clearance.

Using Qualio as their SaMD electronic quality management system, they were able to go through the process seamlessly, securing their 510(k) clearance in October 2023.

“Qualio has helped us tremendously with our eQMS.

But the partnership is really critical too. We need to make sure we’re getting good advice, especially as a start-up. We spent a lot of time selecting the right partner for the job.”
